The Beginning1963

The history of the Sirsa Branch began in August 1963, when devotees in Sirsa sought the Mother’s permission to establish a branch of the Society in the city. The Mother graciously accepted the request and sent two large pictures—one of Sri Aurobindo and one of the Mother.

Along with these, a set of sari-blouse pieces used by Sri Aurobindo and a portion of his Angavastra (Shoulder Cloth) were also sent as a gift for the proposed branch.

The Samadhi

At the heart of the centre stands the sacred marble Samadhi of Sri Aurobindo, a place of deep reverence, silence, and spiritual aspiration. The sacred relics of Sri Aurobindo are enshrined within, making it a cherished place of remembrance and contemplation.

Photographs of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother adorn the Samadhi, lovingly decorated with fresh flowers each day. Visitors come to sit in silence, offer flowers, and experience the peace and stillness of this sacred space. The marble bears a Sanskrit salutation to Sri Aurobindo, expressing the devotion and reverence held for him.

Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry

The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a spiritual community and Ashram in Pondicherry (Puducherry), India. It was founded in 1926 by the Indian philosopher Sri Aurobindo and his spiritual collaborator Mirra Alfassa, known as “The Mother”. Over the years, the Ashram, which also houses the samadhi of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, became the institutional centre of a modern spiritual movement based on Sri Aurobindo’s Integral yoga. It became one of India’s best-known spiritual communities, attracting devotees and visitors from around the world.

There are about 1,200 people who are part of the Ashram, and their school, called the Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education, has over 400 students. The Ashram is situated in an urban environment, where Integral Yoga taught by Sri Aurobindo is a major focus of the community.

Student’s Prayers

Make of us the hero warriors we aspire to become. May we fight successfully the great battle of the future that is to be born, against the past that seeks to endure; so that the new things may manifest and we may be ready to receive them.
